How Denheath Custard Squares Started
Denheath Desserts is owned by Donald and Lisa Templeton.
Lisa's parents Peter and Carol Rutland (residents of Pleasant Point) purchased Denheath House. Carol had a real passion for the "Denheath Custard Square" and was sure the business was worth purchasing on its merit alone. Mum, dad and kids ran the café. We had all had varying degrees of hospitality and retail experience.
Carol truly believed that the Denheath Custard Squares would have huge appeal to people all over the country. As usual she was right!!! We were astounded at the people who travelled far and wide to sample them in Pleasant Point. Requests from cafes to wholesale the product came more and more often. Denheath's famous square was being wholesaled in South Canterbury with a surprising amount of demand. Articles and the TV show Taste NZ also raved about Denheaths Decadent fluffy squares.
In July 2000 Carol Rutland sadly passed away leaving a legacy to fulfill. She had always wanted to make Denheath a household name. In July 2000 we trademarked the name Denheath. Since then we have continued to work hard to introduce new dessert products with a kiwi difference. Hoping, eventually, to make mums dream come true!

Denheath House.
Denheath House is a beautiful two story building in Pleasant Point, originally the towns Post Office. About twelve years ago the Post Office was closed and sold. It was purchased by a couple, (Dennis and Heather), as a family home. Hence, the name, Denheath House, (being an amalgamation of both their names.)
Heather purchased the building after it had been sold and the post office had sadly been closed. Heather was an especially good baker and weaver. She often did her weaving down stairs and many passers by called in to see her. After a short period of time Heather was getting so many visitors she decided to turn down stairs into a Coffee Shop. I was lucky enough to work for Heather in my mid teens. Dennis and Heather sold the business after a few years but left all Heather's original recipes for subsequent owners to use.
